SEC publishes two statistical reports on RICs and MMFs

The reports consolidate information from filed Forms N-MFP and N-CEN.

The SEC has announced the release of a pair of reports centered on registered investment companies (RICs) and money market funds (MMFs), respectively. Each report tracks trends in the registered entities, comparing key metrics to those of previous years.

The Annual Registered Investment Company Update is based on aggregated Form N-Cen data, and includes:

  • the number of registered investment companies and their total assets;
  • the number of funds that relied on certain rules or exemptions under the Investment Company Act;
  • the number of funds that have lines of credit available and their aggregate value; and
  • statistics related to service providers, such as brokers, administrators, custodians, and others.

The other report is Money Market Fund Statistics, based on aggregated Form N-MFP data. This is an enhanced version of the report created by the SEC’s Division of Investment Management. Unlike previous iterations of the report, the present one contains statistics about:

  • internal affiliated funds;
  • portfolio investments;
  • flows; and
  • industry concentration.

The MMF report also “extends the downloadable historical statistical series of data back to 2010.”

Acting SEC Chairman Mark Uyeda said: “These two reports will provide the public with key information about the approximately $41.5 trillion investors trust to funds and the approximately $7.39 trillion invested in money market funds.”
