ASIC appoints Scott Gregson as CEO

The current ACCC Chief Executive Officer is one of a number of new appointments

Scott Gregson has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer at ASIC, and will join the Commission after a nearly 30-year career with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Gregson will start on March 17, 2025, taking over from ASIC’s retiring interim CEO Greg Yanco.

“Scott is an impressive leader and will bring extensive experience to this important role at ASIC,” said ASIC Chair Joe Longo. Longo also added that Gregson stood out in an executive search of domestic and international candidates.

“His commitment to achieving regulatory outcomes that benefit all Australians makes him a strong addition to support ASIC’s commission and head the agency’s executive leadership team.”

Started at ACCC in 1996

Gregson was appointed as ACCC CEO (originally called Chief Operating Officer) in August 2020, after a long career with ACCC which began in 1996 as a graduate.

His work included leading teams that litigated high-profile matters against companies such as Volkswagen, Coles, and Apple, and most recently leading the ACCC’s digital and data transformation program.

“This is a great loss for the ACCC and a great gain for ASIC. Scott Gregson has made an enormous contribution in his nearly 30 years at the ACCC, and he will be sincerely missed. Scott carried his enforcement experience in the agency throughout his career here, as a foundation of the strength of the ACCC. He has been an influential leader across a number of roles,” commented ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb.

Senior Leadership Team

ASIC is currently in the most “significant redesign” of its organization, and has earlier in October 2024 appointed two other new Executive Directors, including:

  • Peter Soros as Executive Director Regulation and Supervision. He joined from the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre, Australia’s financial intelligence and anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorism financing regulator, and will start work in November.
  • Chris Savundra as Executive Director Enforcement and Compliance. Recruitment for his current position of ASIC General Counsel and Executive Director Legal Services is underway. The position was earlier held by Tim Mullaly, who retired this summer.

In April, ASIC announced that CEO Warren Day would join the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions on secondment as the Director’s Executive Officer on June 1, 2024. Therefore, Executive Director of Regulation and Supervision Greg Yanco was appointed as Interim CEO.

Three other new Commissioners were also appointed in 2023:

  • Diana Steicke as Executive Director Registry and Intelligence;
  • Joanne Harper as Executive Director Data, Digital and Technology; and
  • Annie Reeves as Chief People and Culture Transformation Officer.
