Podcast: LeighAnne Thompson shares a lawyer’s responsible approach to AI

We spoke about a lawyer’s approach to AI under professional responsibility rules and about teaching future lawyers on having an ethical approach to the tech.

In this episode, GRIP’s US Content Manager, Julie DiMauro, talks with LeighAnne Thompson about her approach to teaching future lawyers about the ethical use of AI tools. And they discussed how practicing attorneys should look toward their professional responsibility obligations as guidance regarding their AI interactions and to make a cost-benefit analysis in using the tools.

We spoke about:

  • her use of generative AI (GenAI) for legal research and eDiscovery;
  • the compelling benefits in terms of streamlining workflows for legal professionals;
  • the limitations that lawyers particularly may not understand when it comes to GenAI;
  • why the spread of misinformation keeps her up at night;
  • why we need the ethicists and the lawyers at the table during the design and deployment phases of these tools; and
  • her concern for how these large language models use a lot of computational resources.
